Colombia Popayan Cosurca
Cooperative Cosurca is located in the Central Mountain Range
of the Colombian Andes, in the Department of South Cauca, in
the region of Popayan. Cosurca is composed of 615
impoverished families dedicated to coffee production.
Cosurca was founded in March of 1993, comprised of 9
different communities in Macizo Colombiano. The communities
are Almaguer, Argelia, Balboa, Florencia, La Sierra, La
Vega, Mercaderes, Patia and Sucre. Most of the members
previously earned 30-60 dollars monthly. In order to
stabilize the local economy and improve their communities
the group created the "Regional Organic Coffee Project."
Each of its members is recognized for modifying their
growing methods and for following strict organic
regulations. The outcome, along with economic stability in a
depressed market, was increased productivity per hectare.
Before Cosurca was developed, education among people 35
years and older was at the 3rd grade level or less. Today
30% of the members have completed high school! Elan Organic
Coffees and Cosurca have a long standing, mutually
beneficial and sustainable partnership.
